Crickets
Cricket Activity
Crickets are a common pest inside and outside the home or workplace. Although small, they can quickly become a nuisance and attract many unwanted guests.
Crickets are known for their unique shape but primarily for their song. Crickets have a multitude of songs, each with a new meaning. One of the most familiar songs is a chirp, indicating their location to other crickets. Chirping also attracts mates and can be used to determine the temperature outside.
Types of Crickets
There are over 900 species of cricket, but only a handful are known to invade homes. Arizona’s three most common house-invading cricket species are camel, house, and field.

Camel crickets
Camel crickets get their name from their humped-back appearance and are often called “spider crickets” because of their long legs. These pests are usually dark brown or black and can grow to be over an inch long. They are attracted to damp, dark places and are most active at night.

Field crickets
Field crickets are slightly smaller than camel crickets but are similar in appearance. They are dark brown or black with long antennae and hind legs that allow them to jump great distances. Like camel crickets, field crickets are also attracted to moisture and prefer to live outdoors.

House Cricket
The most common type of cricket in Arizona is house cricket. These pests are light brown or tan with three dark bands running down their backs. They are about ¾ of an inch long and have shorter antennae than other cricket species. House crickets are attracted to heat and prefer to live indoors near light sources.
