Pesky Flies

House flies get their name from being the most common fly found around homes. Adult house flies can grow to one-quarter of an inch long and usually live between 15 and 25 days.

They are only able to feed on liquids but have the ability to turn many solid foods into a liquid for them to eat. House flies taste with their feet, which are 10 million times more sensitive to sugar than the human tongue.

House flies tend to stay within 1-2 miles of where they were born; however, they have been known to migrate up to 20 miles to find food.

These insects have been known to carry over 100 different kinds of disease-causing germs, which makes them very bad house guests.

Drain Flies

Drain flies, also known as moth flies, have small bodies covered with hair, giving them a fuzzy appearance. They are weak fliers, and can be found on walking walls in the home, usually in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. They do not bite and are not known to transmit disease to humans. They are most active at night when they can be found flying over drain coverings or sewage disposal plants.

Face Flies

This fly likes to feed on mucus found around eyes and mouths of cattle, hence its name! They were introduced to the U. S. in the 1950s, and can now be found throughout most of the United States and Canada. It’s similar in appearance to-but larger and darker than-the common house fly. Female flies tend to cluster around cattle and horses as fall weather appears. Not only do they feed on mucus around the eyes and mouth, the also feed on blood coming from wounds. Females lay their eggs in fresh, undisturbed dung.

Fruit flies are small flies that fruits and fermenting materials, such as rotten vegetables, as a preferred egg-laying sites. They are found all over the world, and are a concern because they can build up quickly around food processing plants. Adults are strong fliers, and populations grow during times of harvest. They are not only a nuisance pest, but is also known to carry disease.

Horse flies are blood-sucking insects that can be serious pests of domestic and wild animals. While both male and female feed on nectar, it is only the female that feeds on blood, using its scissor-like mouth parts to tear into the flesh of its host, causing painful bites. This species is most active during warmer weather, and they’re vectors of disease. Left uncontrolled, 20-30 horseflies can drain almost a third of a pint of blood from their victims in as little as six hours.
